Chapter Two

Being spoken to with all the respect a person might show a dog makes me want to rebel but, instead, I find myself capitulating to the dominant force that is Alexander Markou. Something about his commanding tone, the way he fixes his dark eyes on my, tells me obedience is the best course of action. So, even though it goes against my instinct to flounce out of here in a blaze of indignation, I remain seated. My cheeks heat as he continues to stare at me. When he finally seems satisfied I’ll do as I’m told, he nods curtly, shoots me one last warning look, and carries his brooding masculinity from the room.

“Can I get you anything while you wait for Alexander?” Carole grimaces apologetically. “Tea? Coffee?”

“No, thank you, Carole.” Smiling warmly to a woman who’s been a regular customer over the last few weeks, I shake my head. The last thing I want to do is make myself comfortable here. I intend to get out of this office as soon as possible.

“Well, if you change your mind, let me know.” As Carole leaves the room, I slump back in my seat. This is going badly. Not, of course, that I expected it to go well. Alexander Markou has a reputation for ruthlessness and he’s definitely going to tell me to move on. He won’t even listen to me pleading my case. I’m sure of it. This isn’t a man I can reason with. I wouldn’t have the first clue how to negotiate with someone like him. A big softie, like Nikos, I can deal with. A warm smile and some free baklava were all it took to win him over. His boss is an entirely different proposition. A few pastries, no matter how mouth-wateringly delicious, are not going to bring him onside.

It’s such a pity. The time since I set up shop outside the London headquarters of Markou International has been the most lucrative in my six months of trading. With a steady stream of appreciative customers, I’ve actually started to make some decent money. It’s not in the formidable Mr. Markou’s league, of course, but I make enough to pay the bills and meet my relatively simple needs.

Now that I’ve come face to face with Alexander, I’m afraid I’ve wrecked everything. For just a fleeting moment, he seemed to recognize something in me. The world of big business is a relatively small one, and I’m sure a man like him must know my grandfather. There can be few people in Greece, if not the whole of Europe, who haven’t heard of the illustrious shipping magnate, Leonidas Pappas. I’ve never met him, myself. He cut my mother off without a penny when she married my father. He sent lawyers to my parents’ funeral to tell me he wanted me to go to him in Greece. Their manner became threatening when I refused to accompany them. They scared the living daylights out of me, so I’ve been lying low ever since.
